Qatar Public Realm – Kiosk structures
Qatar Public Realm – Ashghal / AECOM– Qatar 2015

Together with Harry Dobbs Design, we developed a series of concepts for kiosk structures for the Qatari Public Realm Design Guidelines of the Highways Authority, Ashghal. We drew cues from the very prominent Museum Of Islamic Art building by Ian Pei and thought it would be interesting to have echos of its rotated cubes spread throughout Doha.
The larger kiosk serves as a tourist information centre, shop or cafe which can spill out over the pavement when temperatures allow or be otherwise closed off as an air-conditioned unit.
In the fast growing developments of Doha, the smaller kiosk gives the opportunity to retain the existing life of street vendors or services, such as shoe repair, street food or small retail.
The introduction of Automated Public Toilets is a new step in Doha, needing to allow discreet access via a screened-off entrance. The APT can be suitably combined with a cafe kiosk, back-to-back.
