Windpower – Aerogenerator wind turbine
Client: Windpower – UK 2004
Engineering: Wind Power Limited & Consultant Engineers
Designers: Grimshaw Industrial Design (run by Billings Jackson)
Jonas von Stedingk Capacity: Co-designer
Development concept for a 10 MegaWatt vertical-axis wind turbine, with 300m wing span. Its particular aerodynamic qualities would allow the scaling up to higher power output than the conventional horizontal-axis type. It would also make off-shore mooring possible, without foundations. Special visitor viewing pods were devised to show how one could diversify its use as a destination. The images and concept design were successfully used for fund-raising and media. The concept became part of a Grimshaw masterplanning proposal for the Las Palmas harbour in Gran Canaria.
The project was later abandoned for technical reasons.
